60th Division, made up entirely of 2nd line territorial battalions from London, went to France in June, 1916 where they remained until they were sent to Salonika at the end of the year. During the six months spent on the Western Front they were employed in holding the front line around Arras and were one of the few divisions in France to avoid the Battle of the Somme.

On 7th October,1916, the  2/13th London battalion of 179 Brigade moved into the front line. In the early hours of the morning on 11th October, after a 45 minute artillery bombardment, the enemy raided the battalion lines, south of the Thelus road. The raid was eventually repulsed but not before over twenty casualties were inflicted on the battalion. One of these was Sydney Landrey who died from wounds.
